With Halloween celebrations now out of the way and the leftover sweets have been eaten, our attention focuses on Bonfire Night and especially Remembrance Sunday. If you are a Veteran or know someone who has served in the British Armed Forces, then you’ll be aware about how this is a difficult time of year. There are prestigious remembrance events being carried out across many towns, villages and cities in the UK. With remembrance weekend coming up, I was asked by the British Journal of Mental Health Nursing to write an article about recognising the mental health needs of Veterans in the UK. You can access this article here: Recognising mental health challenges and barriers to treatment among veterans in the UK | British Journal of Mental Health Nursing Part of my NHS role is to provide psychotherapy to Veterans who have experienced mental health difficulties related to their military service. I work with Veterans as young as 18 years of age and as old as 80 years of age. If the Veteran has served in the British Armed Forces and is registered to a GP in Wales then they are eligible for specialist mental health support. We remembrance weekend, we may remember the Veterans who have fallen but we can’t forget those who are still with us.
